Blog Talentor International 2024 Mexico Interview

Located in Brazil, Vertico has a team focused on the Latin American market, a market that Talentor believes in and seeks to reinforce. That is why we shared a moment with Ronald Branco (Vertico’s Latam Principal) and Tatiana Emberson (Vertico’s Associate) so we can dive into this interesting and enriching market!

First things first: Let’s meet Ronald and Tatiana!

Ronald Branco is from Brazil, he is 37 years old, married with two children born in Mexico. He describes himself as a very curious person who loves acquiring knowledge and testing innovative ideas and concepts. I always seek to make a difference in people's lives.

In Vertico, Ronald puts all his effort into the Latin American market, with extensive experience and expertise in providing valuable recruiting and talent acquisition insights, and Executive Search solutions in this region, particularly Mexico. He has a proven track record of success in recruiting and consulting for companies operating in Latin America, understanding the unique dynamics and challenges of the market, and having a deep network of candidates and industry contacts.

Tatiana Emberson was born in Uruguay and has lived in different countries such as Uruguay, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and the UK. She loves connecting with people from all over the world and learning by hearing people´s different life stories and opinions.

With broad experience in Latin American countries and knowledge of the specificities of each market, Tatiana has a proven track record in identifying outstanding talents for various industries in Latin America.

  • Ronald: I would stand out the Employer Branding, the Candidate Experience, the use of AI tools (automation) and the Hybrid Work mode.
  • Tatiana: Besides the Candidate Experience and the use of AI and automation as Ronald mentions, I would add that the market is characterized also by data-driven recruitment, diversity and inclusion topics and retention focus.

How does the Mexican recruiting market differ from other countries?

  • Ronald: Mexico is a market that attracts many companies due to its geography and favorable conditions for foreign investment. It has a diversity of foreigners compared to others, thereby increasing the country's workforce.
  • Tatiana: Relationships are central to the way business is conducted in Mexico and Latin America, and this extends to the recruitment process too.

What are the key challenges in recruiting and hiring talent in Mexico?

  • Ronald: The biggest challenge today is the competition for qualified talents. Mexico has shared service centers for many companies, leading to significant changes in salary levels and company turnover. Hiring bilingual talent and adapting to local regulatory changes are also challenges.
  • Tatiana: Also, remote work has made hiring Latam and Mexican talent easier and more financially beneficial to companies in the US and Europe, making the recruitment landscape more competitive.

Hiring highly qualified talent is another big challenge, emigration of highly skilled and educated individuals to other countries, in search of better career opportunities, higher education, or improved living conditions is very common.

Are there any specific industries or sectors that are experiencing high demand for talent in Mexico?

  • Both: Yes, the main sectors are technology, engineering and manufacturing, and supply chain.

What are the most effective recruitment strategies and techniques that you use at Talentor Mexico/ Vertico in this country?

  • Ronald: Working on the candidate's experience not only attracts talents but also a diversity of referrals. Using tools for the automation of the selection process and providing consulting for candidates and clients to ensure the most accurate hiring are our main techniques.
  • Tatiana: As mentioned before, due to the cultural importance of relationships in Mexico, creating strong relationships and a good candidate experience creates a bond based on trust, that can lead to strong referrals.

Networking events, referrals, and the use of an efficient ATS are a couple of strategies and techniques we use.

How do cultural differences and language barriers impact the recruiting process in Latin America (Brazil and Mexico)? Is there a personal experience you would like to share?

  • Ronald: Without an understanding of local culture and the native language, it is challenging to convey the selection process effectively and attract talent in the country. A profound understanding of both is necessary to generate the best possible experience.

When I arrived in Mexico, I sought to understand by reading, watching the media, and talking to people to adapt to the country as quickly as possible, which was easy because the Mexican people are very receptive.
  • Tatiana: One of the many differences when compared to other countries is that Mexicans may prefer indirect communication to maintain harmony. It's crucial to read between the lines and be aware of subtle cues to understand the full meaning of a message. In Brazil this is also true but to a lesser extent.

Coming from Uruguay where communication is quite direct and confrontation isn´t seen as something negative, I had to learn to tune that down, not to offend anyone!

Are there any specific skills or qualifications that are highly sought after in the Latin American and Mexican job market?

  • Both: Bilingualism, Adaptability and Resilience, Analytical skills and Problem-solving.
